| GP Kartways: Horses Widens Championship Gap |
The Grand Prix Kartways Winter Race League resumed on Wednesday, with 30 drivers looking to make up ground in week five of the championship. Ryan Horses however enjoyed a pair of strong runs, pulling further away in his hunt for his second league title.
The first race of the night witnessed Ajay Ruia take his first win of the season in dominating fashion. Starting fourth on the grid, Ruia made a terrific start, gaining two positions before the end of the first lap. As Ruia stormed to the front, Andrew Thoms also made his way through the pack, having started shotgun on the field, quickly working his way to fourth position. Following a brief caution period, Summer champion Brian Zeidenberg and Thoms freight trained their way past Gerald Harris, as the latter ran wide exiting turn three. Thoms made quick work of Zeidenberg, passing him just one lap later. Through all the fighting, Ruia had run away with the lead, leaving Thoms and Zeidenberg languishing almost 10-seconds off the lead by the checkered flag. Polesitter Amit Varma finished fourth, with outside pole man Harris finishing in sixth position.
In one of the closest finishes in GPK history, Mark Woyslaw took the win over Jason Durigon by less than two-tenths of a second in their first race of the night. With Woyslaw starting seventh and Durigon sixth, it was going to be a rough race if they were going to work their way to the front. Being in the right place at the right time allowed Woyslaw to make his way through traffic with relative ease, taking the lead by the end of the fifth lap, while Durigon was busying playing pinball back in the pack. Despite taking the lead, Woyslaw was not able to pull away as he had liked, gaining less than a second on the rest of the field. Durigon, visibly annoyed by his competitors driving, turned aggressive, pushing other drivers out of his way, forcing his way to the front of the field anyway he could. With three laps to go, Durigon passed Paul Jerinkitsch and had his sights set on Woyslaw. Over the next two laps, Durigon regained all the time he had lost, but with Woyslaw taking a defensive line through the final corner, Durigon was forced to the outside. Woyslaw narrowly outran Durigon to the line, who was in the middle of passing him by the time the duo crossed the stripe. Seyed Hasseni finished third, for his third podium of the season.
With Woyslaw winning his first race, Ryan Horses needed to gain maximum points just to equalize the damage. After starting fifth, Horses was given a free spot when Greg Bettinelli missed the green light, losing three positions, falling to last place on the grid. After a hard fought battle with rookie Cale Thompson, Horses cleanly made his way past with just a handful of laps remaining to take the lead. Holding the lead, he set a new best lap for the league, at a 21.93. That record added an extra two points on to Horses already large points lead, allowing him to pull further away in the race for the championship. Despite his poor start, Bettinelli once again worked his way up from the back of the field to finish third.
In their second races of the night, both Woyslaw and Thoms finished off the podium, with both drivers coming to the line in fourth place, in their respective races. These slip-ups gave Horses an opportunity to make up ground on both drivers, and it was an opportunity he did not waste. Working through traffic is something Horses has become accustom to at the ¼ mile Toronto facility. Starting last in his second race, Horses methodically worked his way to the front of the pack, despite battling with the likes of Bettinelli and Thompson on his way there. These battles allowed Andrew Cowen to pull away with the lead that he held from his first place starting spot. Horses finished in second position, helping him gain yet another handful of points, extending his points lead to seven points over Woyslaw and 13 over Thoms.
The sixth week of GPK’s Winter league goes green November 19th, at 7:50pm. More information at http://gpkartways.com/PDF/racenews08.pdf
