GP Kartways: Pair of Wins for Horses in Week 15

North Toronto’s Grand Prix Kartways recently hosted the 15th round of the 2008/2009 Winter Race League, with a field of over 25 drivers taking part in the action. Among the title contenders, Ryan Horses enjoyed the best results, scoring a pair of wins to make up ground on Jason Durigon and points leader Mark Woyslaw.

The night kicked off with Horses taking his first win of the evening, in a dominating performance. Off the start, Horses quickly made his way to the lead, leaving the fighting pack behind. As Horses threw out fast lap after lap, the pack fell further behind, fighting hard for second position through the 16-lap race. With no competition to hinder him, Horses took the checkered flag more than seven-seconds ahead of second place Richard Cuttler, and nine-seconds clear of Bill Porteous, finishing third.

The second race of the night witnessed yet another clash of the titans, as the Summer league runner-up, and the 2007 Winter league runner-up went head-to-head. Off the start, Amer Mohammed got the jump on the rest of the field, as Jason Durigon and Keenan Harris fought with Andrew Cowen to hold position. As Mohammed drew away from the field, Durigon struggled to keep heat in the tires, as his kart while simultaneously trying to fend off Keenan Harris. As the track warmed up, Durigon was eventually able to get a handle on his kart, albeit too late to make headway on Mohammed, who took the win, with Durigon second, and Harris third.

With Horses and Durigon finishing strong in their first races, Mark Woyslaw needed to be at the top of his game to keep from losing points, and he did so, by taking the win in his first race. Starting at the front of the pack, Woyslaw made short work of the front row, quickly taking the lead as Andrew Thoms went for a spin in turn two, dropping him four places to the back of the pack. Although Woyslaw had the dominant kart in this first race, he did not go unchallenged, as Andrei Losinki spent the entire 16-laps hooked on the previous champions rear bumper. Closing in on the end of the race, Thoms made up ground, taking advantage of the mid-pack battles, eventually coming home in third position, to Losinki and Woyslaw, in second and first respectively.

For the second time in the night, Horses showed just how much muscle and skill he has, by quickly working his way into the lead in race three. Never relinquished the lead, Horses made it two for two on the night, further reducing the gap in the championship fight.

For Woyslaw his second race of the night was not as fortunate, as he fell victim to traffic. Off the start, polesitter Nico Fattore quickly took his kart to a full straightaway lead over the rest of the pack. As Woyslaw struggled, Thoms worked his way to within a kart length of Fattore. The leader however held off the challenge, taking the win over Thoms. Woyslaw finished third, losing three points to Horses, who closed to within eight-points of the championship leader, while Durigon is now just 10 points out of the lead.
