IKN Driver Rankings - June 30, 2010

In its continuing efforts to promote premier indoor karting in North America, IndoorKartingNews.com is pleased to announce the introduction of the IKN Driver Rankings. The newly-created program will take results from IKN’s Partner Tracks from across North America, as well as premier championships and special one-off events, and drop them into our own proven ranking equation to produce a listing that, for the first time, will combine all of the top indoor kart drivers into one offering. The IKN Driver Rankings package has been carefully designed to take into consideration the many different variables in an effort to properly weigh the results, with an emphasis placed on the field strength and field size.

The following is an explanation of how the points are calculated:

The IKN Driver Rankings are calculated using a driver’s best finishes in IKN Partner Track competition (Apex Karting, Dromo 1, F1 Boston, F1 Race Factory, Grand Prix New York, Lehigh Valley Grand Prix, Sykart Indoor Racing Center, Victory Lane Karting, and Xtreme Indoor Karting), as well as selected championships (Indoor Karting World Championship and U.S. Indoor Karting Championship). Assembled using events from the last 12 months, we use a driver’s best six finishes in the official IKN Partner Track events in order to determine their overall current point total. With each new month, results from the same month of the previous year are discarded to deliver the current ranking list.

Each race was initially weighted based on its prestige and history, and of course the depth of talent, with a score of 10 being the highest attainable base ranking. For the initial driver rankings, which is based on race results from July 2008 through July 2009, the Indoor Karting World Championship and U.S. Indoor Karting Championship were given a base ranking of 10, several special endurance events garnered a 9 score (12 Hours of Dromo, LVGP 12 Hour Race, GPNY 12 Hour Race, NIKA Grand Prix of Olympia, Xtreme Grand Prix 12-Hour, 24 Hours of Charlotte, F1 Race Factory 10-Hour, NIKA Grand Prix of Portland), while regular league races received a base ranking of 8.

Added to the initial base ranking is the variable of field size, which helps confirm the importance, strength and competitiveness of the series. A percentage of one weighting point is added for the size of the field, with a full field of 30 drivers or more providing one full point. Another full point or fraction of a point will be added to any future event ranking and will be based on the field strength of each event. The percentage of the top-50 ranked drivers in the race will also be factored into the final event ranking. The sum of these numbers becomes the overall ranking for any race.

Following a race, drivers receive points based on their finishing positions with 100 points earned for a win. Each subsequent position drops by one point with 99 points given to the second place driver and so on throughout the field. These points are then multiplied by the overall ranking to produce a driver’s final point total from each event. Using a driver’s best six races, we calculate each driver’s overall score and subsequent ranking.

IKN Driver Rankings - June 30, 2010

Unlike most forms of motorsports, the hot summer months are the quiet time of the year in the indoor karting ranks. With drivers electing to spend time with friends and families enjoying the good weather outside via long weekends and holidays, a vast majority of the IndoorKartingNews.com partner tracks scale back their leagues. As a result, the June edition of the IKN Driver Rankings – for the first time ever – features no changes among the top-five and little movement among the top-50.

Jordan Pembleton – the reigning IKN Driver of the Year – remains the points leader in the IKN Driver Rankings, ending June with 6088 markers. The Victory Lane Karting, like many of the top indoor karters in North America, took the month off from league and endurance competition. Pembleton therefore still relies on is fifth place finish in the ’09 U.S. Indoor Karting Championship (1094 pts), fifth place in the ’09 Indoor Kart World Championship (1066 pts), a runner-up placing in the 24 Hours Charlotte endurance race (1032 pts) and a runner-up result in the Lehigh Valley Grand Prix 12 Hour Race (1010 pts) for the majority of the points. The North Carolina racer has now led IKN Driver Rankings for an impressive nine consecutive months.

IKN Driver Rankings - May 31, 2010

While most of North America is currently thinking about barbeques, beach, pools and backyard get togethers during the summer months, a core group of racers are focused on continually challenging for top honors at IndoorKartingNews.com partner tracks via league and endurance races. With that in mind, it is time to see who the best of the best are via the May edition of the IKN Driver Rankings.

As has been the case for over half a year, Jordan Pembleton leads the way on the IKN Driver Rankings table, ending the month of May with a total of 6088 points. The star racer from Victory Lane Karting is one of two karters to break the elusive 6000 points barrier, thanks to a superb month on-track. In addition to winning both the Lightweight (927 pts) and Heavyweight (922 pts) races in his first Spring League outing of the season, the North Carolina native was part of the runner-up squad (1032 pts) in the 2010 edition of the prestigious 24 Hours Charlotte endurance race. When combined with his fifth place in the ’09 Indoor Karting World Championship (1066 pts), fifth place in the ’09 U.S. Indoor Karting Championship (1094 pts) and runner-up result in the Lehigh Valley Grand Prix 12 Hour Race (1010 pts), Pembleton now has four 1000+ races on his current rankings resume. IKN Driver Rankings - April 30, 2010

As the temperatures begin to rise outdoors, thoughts begin turn to getting outside and enjoying the weather. That being said, the action at the IndoorKartingNews.com partner tracks still rages on, with many top racers looking to add another championship title to their resumes. For that reason, it is the ideal time to unveil the April edition of the IKN Driver Rankings.

For a seventh consecutive month, North Carolina’s Jordan Pembleton tops the IKN Driver Rankings table, ending the month with a points tally of 5988. The Victory Lane Karting star, who is believed to be preparing for strong summer run at the Indoor Karting World Championship – being hosted by F1 Race Factory in Arizona – did not go racing during the month of April. As a result, Pembleton continues to rely on three +1000 scores – ’09 Indoor Karting World Championship (5th place - 1066 pts), ’09 U.S. Indoor Karting Championship (fifth place - 1094 pts) and Lehigh Valley Grand Prix 12 Hour Race (second place – 1010 pts) – for the majority of his points. When added with three 900+ scores, it is easy to understand why Pembleton remains the driver everyone is chasing in the IKN Driver Rankings.

IKN Driver Rankings - July 1, 2009

After a great deal of hard work gathering results from all the IndoorKartingNews.com Partner Tracks and spirited discussion by the IKN staff, the inaugural IKN Driver Rankings are ready to be unveiled. Utilizing results from July 2008 to July 2009, the top positions in the rankings feature a virtual who’s who of the North American indoor karting ranks.

Leading the way inaugural IKN driver rankings is Truman Godfrey, who races primarily out of the Victory Lane Karting facility in North Carolina and F1 Race Factory in Phoenix, which is our newest IKN Partner Track. The talented American scored an impressive 5684 points via his best six results from July 2008 to July 2009. Given that Godfrey was the runner-up in the 2008 U.S. Indoor Kart Championship at F1RF, scored one win and four podium finishes in the 2009 North Carolina Indoor Karting Championship series, was part of the third place squad in the 2009 24 Hours of Charlotte endurance race and finished as the Lightweight division runner-up of the Midwest Regional Indoor Karting Championship, it really comes as no surprise he is the top driver in the first edition of the IKN Driver Rankings.

Making it a Victory Lane Karting one-two in the first IKN Driver Rankings, Dan Burke scored 5543 points when all the calculations were completed. The primary source of Mr. Burke’s total was generated via a 10th place finish in the 2008 Indoor Karting World Championship, a ninth place result in the 2008 U.S. Indoor Karting Championship, and multiple wins (seven in total) in Winter and Summer league competition at VLK.

Completing the top-three in the initial IKN Driver Rankings is Dromo 1’s Diego Morales. Racing against several of the top drivers in the country on a regular basis, the American totaled 5528 points. Highlighting his resume during the July to June run was wins in the 12 Hours of Dromo and the Dromo 1 Grand Prix Series, as well a top-20 finishes at both the IKWC and USIKC.

Showcasing the depth of talent at Dromo 1 in California, spots four and five on the IKN Driver Rankings were filled by track standouts Jon Kimbrell and Patrick Britain. Kimbrell amassed 5525 points via a third place finish in the ’09 12 Hours of Dromo race last February and a pair of wins in the highly competitive Dromo 1 Grand Prix Seriesr. Britain scored 5504 pts thanks to one win and several podium finishes in the GP Series.

One of the biggest surprises is the positioning of reigning U.S. Indoor Karting Champion and IKWC standout Mike Smith, who debuts at 49th with 5035 points. Smith ran a limited schedule in 2008, competing in just five races, which left him short on points by one full race. Smith was still trackside, acting as Race Director for the leagues at Sykart Indoor Karting in Tigard, OR, and he has now moved to Apex Karting in Tumwater, WA. We don’t expect this to last for long, hoping that Smith will jump into a couple of league events to post his necessary six events.

Other drivers of note in the inaugural IKN Driver Rankings are Steve Pepka (13th - 5283 pts), the top Sykart Indoor Racing Center race pilot who was a heat race winner at last fall’s USIKC, Jason Drescher (18th - 5223 pts), the leading Xtreme Indoor Karting driver; Kevin Carney (19th – 5211 pts), the highest ranked Lehigh Grand Prix driver; Ryan Horses (34th – 5105), the top Grand Prix Kartways driver; Chad Arndt (46th – 5046), the leading Velocity Indoor Karting race pilot; Adam Labonte (55th – 5006), the top F1 Boston driver; and Shawn Brisco (386th – 1663 pts), top driver from Race Place Motorsports.

The IKN staff will now go to work inputing all the results from July 2009, discarding last July’s performances. The addition of F1 Race Factory to the IKN Partner Track family should also begin shaking things up once their new league gets going in mid-August, as many of their top drivers have strong finishes from last year’s USIKC, which is ranked highest of any of the races in the program.
