In its continuing efforts to promote premier indoor karting in North America, IndoorKartingNews.com is pleased to announce the introduction of the IKN Driver Rankings. The newly-created program will take results from IKN’s Partner Tracks from across North America, as well as premier championships and special one-off events, and drop them into our own proven ranking equation to produce a listing that, for the first time, will combine all of the top indoor kart drivers into one offering. The IKN Driver Rankings package has been carefully designed to take into consideration the many different variables in an effort to properly weigh the results, with an emphasis placed on the field strength and field size.
The following is an explanation of how the points are calculated:
The IKN Driver Rankings are calculated using a driver’s best finishes in IKN Partner Track competition (Dromo 1, F1 Boston, Grand Prix Kartways, Lehigh Valley Grand Prix, Race Place Motorsports, Sykart Indoor Racing Center, Velocity Indoor Karting, Victory Lane Karting, and Xtreme Indoor Karting), as well as selected championships (Indoor Karting World Championship and U.S. Indoor Karting Championship). Assembled using events from the last 12 months, we use a driver’s best six finishes in the official IKN Partner Track events in order to determine their overall current point total. With each new month, results from the same month of the previous year are discarded to deliver the current ranking list.
Each race was initially weighted based on its prestige and history, and of course the depth of talent, with a score of 10 being the highest attainable base ranking. For the initial driver rankings, which is based on race results from July 2008 through July 2009, the Indoor Karting World Championship and U.S. Indoor Karting Championship were given a base ranking of 10, several special endurance events garnered a 9 score (12 Hours of Dromo, 12 and 24 Hours of Charlotte, Three Hours of Lehigh Valley, Midwest Regional Indoor Karting Championship), while regular league races received a base ranking of 8.
Added to the initial base ranking is the variable of field size, which helps confirm the importance, strength and competitiveness of the series. A percentage of one weighting point is added for the size of the field, with a full field of 30 drivers or more providing one full point. Another full point or fraction of a point will be added to any future event ranking and will be based on the field strength of each event. The percentage of the top-50 ranked drivers in the race will also be factored into the final event ranking. The sum of these numbers becomes the overall ranking for any race.
Following a race, drivers receive points based on their finishing positions with 100 points earned for a win. Each subsequent position drops by one point with 99 points given to the second place driver and so on throughout the field. These points are then multiplied by the overall ranking to produce a driver’s final point total from each event. Using a driver’s best six races, we calculate each driver’s overall score and subsequent ranking. |
