| IKN Driver Rankings - October 31, 2009 |
Just prior to the top indoor karters from across the U.S.A. gathering in Phoenix for the 2009 U.S. Indoor Karting Championship, it is time to reveal the October edition of the IKN Driver Rankings, utilizing the results from IndoorKartingNews.com Partner tracks.
Mike Smith, the reigning U.S. Indoor National Champion, will enter the 2009 edition of the USIKC as the new No. 1 racer in the IKN Driver Rankings, thanks to a points total of 5731. The Apex Karting takes over the lead position for the first time since the rankings were introduced primarily due to a recent run of podium finishes in the Sykart Indoor Racing Series. In addition to the GT2 class wins in Rounds Two (852 pts) and Round Four (852 pts) this past month, the Washington-based driver adds race wins at the 2008 USIKC (1100 pts), Dromo 12 Hours (1000 pts) and Oregon Indoor Karting Championship (933 pts) to his leading points total. The end result, is Smith is the new top dog in the IKN Driver Rankings.

IKN Driver Rankings Points Breakdown
| Race | Finish | Points| ’08 USIKC | 1st | 1100 | | Dromo 12 Hours | 1st | 1000 | | 24 Hours of Charlotte | 2nd | 990 | | Oregon Indoor Karting Championship | 1st | 933 | | SIRS GT2 Fall League Round #3 | 2nd | 856 | | SIRS GT2 Fall League Round #4 | 1st | 852 | |
Former No. 1 driver Truman Godfrey remains at the pointy end of the rankings, falling one spot to No. 2 in the October rankings with a revised points total of 5623. The Arizona driver’s total is not truly reflective of how he did in the month of October, as IKN was unable to get results from the final few F1 Race Factory races during the month of October prior to releasing the rankings for the 2009 USIKC. As a result, Godfrey continues to rely on a runner-up result in the 2008 U.S. Indoor Karting Championship (1089 pts), the win in Round One of the North Carolina Indoor Karting Championship (900 pts), and a runner-up finish in the Midwest Regional Indoor Karting Championship (931 pts) for the majority of his points.
Adam Kellerman is the new No. 3 driver in the IKN Driver Rankings, as a result of October-ending points total of 5596. The longtime Sykart Indoor Racing Center pilot improved five positions during the month thanks to some superb outings in the always competitive SIRS. Kellerman won both the P1 (863 pts) and GT2 (864 pts) classes in Round Three, as well as the P1 (864 pts) and GT2 (852 pts) classes in Round Five.
Completing the top-five in the October edition of the IKN Driver Rankings is the Victory Lane Karring’s Jordan Pembleton and Michael Ibach. Pembleton, having not taken part in any league outings during the month, fell out of the top-three for the first time in three months with a new points total of 5594. Ibach cracked the top-five for the first time, after scoring Lightweight wins in Round One (922 pts), Round Two (922 pts) and Round Three (918 pts) of the Winter League, generating a points total of 5586.
Other drivers of note in the October edition of the IKN Driver Rankings are Jon Kimbrell (falling one position to sixth – 5584 pts), the top Dromo 1 driver; Eduardo Pardo (dropping one spot to 21st – 5360 pts), the leading Xtreme Indoor Karting driver; Brad Carosella (falling six spots to 43rd - 5212 pts), the highest ranked Lehigh Valley Grand Prix driver; Chad Arndt (down six positions to 78th – 5046 pts), the leading Velocity Indoor Karting race pilot; Adam Labonte (down three places to 85th – 5006 pts), the top F1 Boston driver; and John Truscott (up two places to 389 – 3138 pts), the top driver from Race Place Motorsports.
The “Hard Charger” among the top-50 of the IKN Driver Rankings in October was Jade Gurss. The Victory Lane Karting driver improved a staggering 248 places over the course of the month, finishing 48th on the charts with a points total of 5200. Gurss' increased points total came via a fourth (883 pts) and sixth (865 pts) places in the October edition of the Golden Benny races at the North Carolina track.

In its continuing efforts to promote premier indoor karting in North America, IndoorKartingNews.com is pleased to announce the introduction of the IKN Driver Rankings. The newly-created program will take results from IKN’s Partner Tracks from across North America, as well as premier championships and special one-off events, and drop them into our own proven ranking equation to produce a listing that, for the first time, will combine all of the top indoor kart drivers into one offering. The IKN Driver Rankings package has been carefully designed to take into consideration the many different variables in an effort to properly weigh the results, with an emphasis placed on the field strength and field size.
The following is an explanation of how the points are calculated:
The IKN Driver Rankings are calculated using a driver’s best finishes in IKN Partner Track competition (Dromo 1, F1 Boston, Grand Prix Kartways, Lehigh Valley Grand Prix, Race Place Motorsports, Sykart Indoor Racing Center, Velocity Indoor Karting, Victory Lane Karting, and Xtreme Indoor Karting), as well as selected championships (Indoor Karting World Championship and U.S. Indoor Karting Championship). Assembled using events from the last 12 months, we use a driver’s best six finishes in the official IKN Partner Track events in order to determine their overall current point total. With each new month, results from the same month of the previous year are discarded to deliver the current ranking list.
Each race was initially weighted based on its prestige and history, and of course the depth of talent, with a score of 10 being the highest attainable base ranking. For the initial driver rankings, which is based on race results from July 2008 through July 2009, the Indoor Karting World Championship and U.S. Indoor Karting Championship were given a base ranking of 10, several special endurance events garnered a 9 score (12 Hours of Dromo, 12 and 24 Hours of Charlotte, Three Hours of Lehigh Valley, Midwest Regional Indoor Karting Championship), while regular league races received a base ranking of 8.
Added to the initial base ranking is the variable of field size, which helps confirm the importance, strength and competitiveness of the series. A percentage of one weighting point is added for the size of the field, with a full field of 30 drivers or more providing one full point. Another full point or fraction of a point will be added to any future event ranking and will be based on the field strength of each event. The percentage of the top-50 ranked drivers in the race will also be factored into the final event ranking. The sum of these numbers becomes the overall ranking for any race.
Following a race, drivers receive points based on their finishing positions with 100 points earned for a win. Each subsequent position drops by one point with 99 points given to the second place driver and so on throughout the field. These points are then multiplied by the overall ranking to produce a driver’s final point total from each event. Using a driver’s best six races, we calculate each driver’s overall score and subsequent ranking. |
