Adding in all the results from the IndoorKartingNews.com Partner tracks during the month of November, it is now time to unveil the penultimate edition of the 2009 IKN Driver Rankings.
Jordan Pembleton, having taking over the No. 1 spot in the IKN Driver Rankings following the U.S. Indoor Karting Championship, retained the top spot at the end of November via a points total of 5857. The Victory Lane Karting standout, having finished fifth in the USIKC against 24 of the top 50 ranked driver early in the month, added to his points tally at the end of November with a Round Seven Winter Adult League victory in the Heavyweight class (918 pts). When combined with his 1000+ point scores at the USIKC (1094 pts) and the Indoor Karting World Championship (1066 pts), where he finished fifth overall, Jordan Pembleton is once again the No. 1 driver in the IKN Driver Rankings.

Mike Smith holds station in second place of the IKN Driver Rankings when the results were tabulated for November, despite increasing his points total to 5758. The former No. 1 ranked driver from Apex Karting not only enjoyed a successful run at the 2009 USIKC during the past month, finishing third overall (1117 pts), but he also added a pair of victories in the final GT2 races of the Sykart Indoor Race Series Fall League.
Marking no change among the top-three in the IKN driver rankings since the completion of the USIKC, newly crowned U.S. National Champion Jon Kimbrell remains third with a points total 5740. Unlike the leading two drivers in the rankings, the Dromo 1 hotshoe did not take part in any point scoring races during the second half of November, with his only run behind the wheel taking place in the outdoor Machismo 500 event.
Completing the top-five in the November edition of the IKN Driver Rankings is Victory Lane Karting’s Dan Burke and F1 Race Factory’s Truman Godfrey. Burke retained fourth place in the rankings via revised points total of 5711, which was the result of a pair of runner-up finishes in the final two VLK Winter League Lightweight races. Godfrey’s points total of 5663 remains unchanged from the post USIKC rankings, as the former top ranked IKN driver did not race after the prestigious national championship race.
Other drivers of note in the October edition of the IKN Driver Rankings are Adam Kellerman (unchanged in sixth – 5638 pts), the top Sykart Indoor Racing Center driver; Eduardo Pardo (dropping two spots to 24th – 5366 pts), the leading Xtreme Indoor Karting driver; Kevin Carney (up 12 places to 31st - 5326 pts), the new highest ranked Lehigh Valley Grand Prix driver; Mike Grimm (unchanged in 54th – 5192 pts), the new leading Velocity Indoor Karting race pilot; Adam Labonte (down six places to 96th – 5006 pts), the top F1 Boston driver; and John Truscott (down 14 places to 405th – 3138 pts), the top driver from Race Place Motorsports.
The November “Hard Charger” among the top-50 is Dan Krause. The Victory Lane Karting race pilot improved 39 places over the course of the month, placing 47th on the charts with a points total of 5222. Burke, after a multi-month hiatus from racing, returned to action in fine form, winning the Lightweight class in Round Seven of the VLK Winter League (921 pts), as well as finishing third in the Heavyweight class (900 pts).

In its continuing efforts to promote premier indoor karting in North America, IndoorKartingNews.com is pleased to announce the introduction of the IKN Driver Rankings. The newly-created program will take results from IKN’s Partner Tracks from across North America, as well as premier championships and special one-off events, and drop them into our own proven ranking equation to produce a listing that, for the first time, will combine all of the top indoor kart drivers into one offering. The IKN Driver Rankings package has been carefully designed to take into consideration the many different variables in an effort to properly weigh the results, with an emphasis placed on the field strength and field size.
The following is an explanation of how the points are calculated:
The IKN Driver Rankings are calculated using a driver’s best finishes in IKN Partner Track competition (Dromo 1, F1 Boston, Grand Prix Kartways, Lehigh Valley Grand Prix, Race Place Motorsports, Sykart Indoor Racing Center, Velocity Indoor Karting, Victory Lane Karting, and Xtreme Indoor Karting), as well as selected championships (Indoor Karting World Championship and U.S. Indoor Karting Championship). Assembled using events from the last 12 months, we use a driver’s best six finishes in the official IKN Partner Track events in order to determine their overall current point total. With each new month, results from the same month of the previous year are discarded to deliver the current ranking list.
Each race was initially weighted based on its prestige and history, and of course the depth of talent, with a score of 10 being the highest attainable base ranking. For the initial driver rankings, which is based on race results from July 2008 through July 2009, the Indoor Karting World Championship and U.S. Indoor Karting Championship were given a base ranking of 10, several special endurance events garnered a 9 score (12 Hours of Dromo, 12 and 24 Hours of Charlotte, Three Hours of Lehigh Valley, Midwest Regional Indoor Karting Championship), while regular league races received a base ranking of 8.
Added to the initial base ranking is the variable of field size, which helps confirm the importance, strength and competitiveness of the series. A percentage of one weighting point is added for the size of the field, with a full field of 30 drivers or more providing one full point. Another full point or fraction of a point will be added to any future event ranking and will be based on the field strength of each event. The percentage of the top-50 ranked drivers in the race will also be factored into the final event ranking. The sum of these numbers becomes the overall ranking for any race.
Following a race, drivers receive points based on their finishing positions with 100 points earned for a win. Each subsequent position drops by one point with 99 points given to the second place driver and so on throughout the field. These points are then multiplied by the overall ranking to produce a driver’s final point total from each event. Using a driver’s best six races, we calculate each driver’s overall score and subsequent ranking. |
