| GPNY: Sayers Clinches Endurance League Title in Week Seven |
The Grand Prix New York Endurance League entered the closing stages on January 27th, with Round Seven taking place at the Mt. Kisco, N.Y. indoor karting facility.
A total 17 drivers lined up on the start line on the Uptown track waiting for the green flag to drop. To make things more interesting Round Seven consisted of a wet track, so the first chicane had the possibilities for disaster. Tyler Sands earned the important five bonus points by grabbing the pole position from Bobby Sayers and Tom Sands by only two tenths of a second. When the flag waved, Sayers, having already clinched the Endurance League title with one race remaining, did not give an inch and managed to beat Tyler Sands into turn one. All seventeen drivers made it through the first turn, and the second and third. The corkscrew was where the first few victims fell, but in all the start of the race was unbelievable to watch and the front pack stayed close for the entire race. With Sayers in front, Tyler Sands on his bumper in second and Tom Sands holding his own in third, it wasn’t long before they started to lap traffic.
One small mistake from a back marker was all it took, and Sands was through into the lead. He quickly made the point of showing he was the man to beat in the wet, taking a substantial lead over second place. With the heavy kart contact from the back marker, Sayers' kart was damaged and he had no choice but to pit and replace it, which put him out of contention. He however enjoyed a superb recovery, with a last lap pass on Michael Cohen to earn the final podium spot.
The drive of the race however had to go to the youngest driver in the field Alex Eickelbeck. With kart problems in qualifying and the race, he too had to change karts mid-race and ended up as far back as 14th at one point. He kept his head down and halfway through the race started to make his comeback through the field. Consistently setting the fast laps as the track was drying, he found himself in the hunt for a podium. By the time the checkered flag waved, Eickelbeck was in second place, a half a lap down on Tyler Sands. With his second place in the race he moves up to second place in the championship. Completing the top-five in Round Seven were Cohen and Raffaele Sammut. While Steven Eickelbeck was having a tough time throughout the race, with not much luck on his side, he put in a last lap flyer from nowhere, stealing the five bonus points for the fastest lap of the race.
Sayers is the Grand Prix New York Endurance League champion, but the battle for the rest of the top-five is still up for grabs, with four drivers in the fight for the final two podium spots and two more drivers ready to pounce if the top six don’t perform. Add in Tyler Sands entering on a high after his victory and looking for the double, fans may be in for the closest finish in GPNY league history.
The Grand Prix New York Endurance League concluded on February 3rd, with the super track three-hour finale.
